I had the total knee replacement in late October 2024 in ward 4C of Gartnavel Hospital after a lengthy time on waiting list.
Whilst I was apprehensive about the procedure I was immediately put at ease on admittance by the professionalism of the nursing staff on ward 4C and the registrar and the clear information provided on the process and timeframe for the surgery.
When I was taken to the pre operative awaiting the next step, again the staff provided clear information and likely timeline for going into anaesthesia. The staff were very caring, kind and professional which was very reassuring. They do it every day and yet were able to demonstrate empathy for the potentially intrepid situation pre op and the next steps can be without being patronising. That's a real skill.
Again going into anaesthesia the reassurance of the information provided on the process was great and very clear. I felt very secure in the way the staff executed their responsibility in a clear and empathetic way. I remember thinking I was in very safe hands before falling asleep.
The surgery went well and the Surgeon and Registrar visited me later in the ward to advise me of how the surgery went and the next steps. Yet again they were both very reassuring, empathetic and human in their approach. Remarkable given the numbers of people they perform operations on in a working week.
Post-operative service was wonderful too. I felt in really safe hands and the young staff nurse in charge of my care was also very reassuring, caring and empathetic as she carried out her duties ensuring my well being.
Nursing staff on ward 4C then took over my care. They were wonderful. Busy ward but felt in safe hands every step of the way. That is so reassuring when I felt very vulnerable. Suddenly you go from a person getting on with life in the outside world to a patient needing lots of support in one short afternoon. The nursing staff were very caring, kind and professional and excellent at providing information as they worked to support me after the operation.
What a wonderful professional job done by everyone involved in the entire process of TKR, including the cheerful porters.
Thank you to all the staff involved for your professionalism executed with real skill and total empathy.
"What a wonderful professional job"
