"More support needed at postpartum check for mother and baby"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services

(as a parent/guardian),

Attended 6 week postpartum checks for both baby and myself (mother) at the Calderside practice of Blantyre Health Centre. We were taken 20 minutes late for the first appointment which meant they overlapped one another, fortunately(? ) they were still able to see us both.

Mothers postpartum check was very brief. As a first time mother I had one or two questions about my body and how I should be recovering. I asked and was told "It should be fine. " or "Hmm yes, just go ahead. " to all of my queries. No helpful information, no further investigation or treatment.

Baby's check up was very much the same, very brief. Again as a first time mother I had some worries as my baby has been periodically unwell. The GP asked how baby has been and as I started to explain I was told "Listen I'm just here to do a physical check, it should just go away in a while, probably an age thing. " This is difficult to hear when you have a baby who cries in pain most of the day.

As you can imagine this was very frustrating. I now have to attend a different clinic for answers which ultimately means another stressful trip out of the house with a very young baby. That, and being left with a feeling of unimportance. Not nice at such an emotional time.

Dear M19,

I was disappointed to read the account of your six week postpartum check with your GP, this is clearly a very important check-up and I’m sorry you didn’t feel supported nor have your questions answered. I will share your feedback regarding your consultation with Dr Gregor Smith Director of Primary Care Medical Services.

I’m concerned to read that you feel your child is crying with pain most of the day; I would urge you to contact your Health Visitor as a matter of urgency if you feel this is still the case.

Your Health Visitor will be able to assess your child, answer your questions about your own health and advise you of other support and groups that are available in your area.

If you haven’t been in touch with your Health Visitor yet please contact the Patient Affairs Department on Tel No: 01698 858321 and they will ask your Health Visitor to contact you directly.

Kind regards
