"My career change"

About: Chilwell Children's Centre

(as a volunteer/advocate),

I volunteered at SureStart Chilwell after they put me through a course on Breastfeeding Peer Support. I had so much help and guidance as a volunteer and I truly felt part of the team. Katie helped me so much and suggested that I embark on my level 3 in Early Years Education. She set up the meeting with Access Training and has been on hand for advice/ friendship the whole way through. I completed my level 3 in April and have since been promoted   to Language Lead at my setting. I have just been nominated as Apprentice of the Year by Access Training. This career change has been the best thing that has happened to me. After having children I felt that I was in a professional rut (I had previously completed a degree Law and then worked as a professional pasty chef- as an army wife it is hard to keep hold of a valid career) and I had no idea what to do. The Children’s Centre allowed me to find a passion I didn’t know I had! I offer my thanks to Katie and the whole Chilwell team for helping me recognise a career that I absolutely adore. Thank you 😊

Having children is a big life event and is often a time where parents take stock, reflect on life as a whole and feel empowered to do "something different" That is why children's centres are so vital. to help support parents and carers at challenging times and to help offer information, support advice and guidance.

I'm glad this support helped you to find something you have real passion doing and wish you all the best for the future

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your story on this forum, it is always great to hear when people have benefitted from support - especially when it has helped you to make a successful transition into a successful career choice. Well done to you!

The staff at Children's Centres work hard to provide the correct support and guidance to people like you, people looking (sometimes unknowingly) for their next steps - I am really pleased they helped you with the guidance you needed.

Being recommended for 'Apprentice of the Year' is an amazing achievement and your role of 'Language Lead' for your employer must have made you feel really proud of yourself - Well Done.

As you say, being an army wife and raising a family brings challenges of its own - but you have overcome all of this and found yourself in a career that will bring you many happy years.
